Trojans tie for third at Crestwood

The Turkey Valley Trojans are in first place in the Upper Iowa Conference standings as of Tuesday afternoon.
Granted, Ashley Walz and Tammy Vrzak’s TV volleyball squad has only played just one league match that’s counted in the standings thus far in 2024.
Sidenote – none of the other eight squads in the UIC have played a conference match, outside of the Central Elkader Warriors, who the Trojans defeated last week Monday in four sets – 25-22, 25-18, 23-25 and 25-18.
The point?
The Trojans – commandeered by the coaching tandem of Walz and Vrzak – are one to keep an eye on this fall in the UIC standings.
While the race for the league crown could well be wide open this year and come down to four or five teams that have a legitimate shot at a conference crown – TV will have as good as a shot as any to vie for a UIC title.
TV placed third in the league last year behind ’23 league champ North Fayette Valley and runner-up South Winn. The year before TV tied for the conference championship with Clayton Ridge in 2022.
TV took on NFV at the Crestwood Invite on Saturday and those NFV TigerHawks turned back the Trojans by a score of 21-18 and 21-8.
But TV also thoroughly dominated another league foe in the weekend get-together in Cresco in the form of Kee, which the Trojans won going away over the Hawks with a sweep of 21-4 and 21-9.
Turkey Valley (4-6, 1-0) also topped Riceville, 22-20 and 21-14, but fell to the host Cadets, 21-13, 21-19.
That 2-2 effort allowed TV to tie for third place.
“The girls are starting to come together and play as a team,” said Vrzak. “All the hitters came to play.”
TV was 40-42 serving versus Riceville and missed just one serve (40-41) in the match against Kee.
“Our serving was fantastic and Morgan Vsetecka did a super job digging in the back row!” said Vrzak.
Vsetecka, a senior libero, produced 48 digs in the four matches over at Cresco.
