Trojans top Riceville in five innings

By Becky Walz,

Several big innings put Friday’s contest to rest, 14-4, between the Turkey Valley baseball team (7-17) and Riceville (4-13).
“The boys swung the bats well and it was a great way to end the week,” said Coach Dan Stepan about the non-conference win.
A Dylan Reicks’ single and stolen base set Garrett Kurtenbach up for the RBI double in the first inning to give the Trojans their initial score of the game. The contest broke wide open in the third as TV fans saw 12 batters go to the plate, scoring seven runs. The inning was highlighted by a two-run homer by G. Kurtenbach. The junior connected for a single in the fourth and scored the lone run of the inning for the Trojans to put them ahead 9-0.
TV gave up one tally in the bottom of the fourth but went one to tally five additional runs in the fifth. The Wildcats worked to erase the deficit but came up short as the 10-run rule held and the game ended in five frames.
The win on the mound went to senior Kalvin Langreck with four strikeouts with Calvin Bodensteiner climbing the hill in relief.
G. Kurtenbach went 4-for-4 at the plate with a home run, double and two singles, driving in three runs. Reicks had two singles and had two RBI.
