Trojans, Warriors linksters split UIC dual

After a two-week postponement the Turkey Valley and South Winn golf teams squared off in a conference dual Tuesday at Jackson Heights Golf Course, with the Trojan girls and Warrior boys coming out on top.
The TV girls eked out a narrow-two stroke victory over the Lady Warriors, 253 to 255, while the SW boys swept medalist honors to win 179 to 202.
South Winn’s Sydney Becker (52) was medalist with a 52 and with a 58 it was Turkey Valley junior Tess Franzen as runner-up.
According to TV coach John Reicks, senior Ali Hoffert was off her usual steady game but still ground out a 61. Senior Kylie Wurzer gave the Trojans a big boost with a 63 and freshman Mariah Throndson carved out a 71 to count for the Trojans.
Freshmen Bella Gruenberg (72) and Megan Blong (78) continued to gain valuable experience as first-year golfers.
For South Winn Brooke Steffans provided a 63, followed by Katrina Hageman with a 66. Filling out the Warrior scorecard with a 74 was junior Ruthie Frana. Hannah Pahl toured the course with a 78.
In boys’ action, the medalist was Warrior sophomore Carson Wenthold who fired a 42 and teammate Logan Baumler came in with a 44, just enough to edge Trojan junior Garrett Kurtenbach by one stroke.
Aside from the medalist for South Winn, Shaun Klimesh (46), Brandon Frana (47), Martin Horstman (49) and Jordan Baumler (54) were on the course. Junior varsity linksters touring the course were Jacob Bohr (54), Brady Lensing (54), Aiden Feickert (55), Dawson Wenthold (59), Adrian Hageman (61), Derek Busch (65) and Brady Jaster (67).
TV’s Kurtenbach fired a steady bogey round of 45. Fellow juniors Brody Hackman and Jackson Vsetecka each carded 51s and freshman Caleb Kurtenbach shot a 55 on the night. Braylen Byrne (56) and senior Cael Wickham (62) completed the Trojan scorecard. In JV action, Brady Barta fired a 61, while Nelson Reicks ended the day with a 73.
South Winn wraps up the regular season at Guttenberg versus Clayton Ridge Thursday, May 6 at 4 p.m., while the Trojans host West Central in a final UIC dual Thursday as well. The TV boys have one more dual on the calendar as they travel to Cresco Friday, May 7. The Upper Iowa Conference meet will be held at South Winn Golf and Country Club in Calmar Monday, May 10 at 9 a.m.
