Undefeated in district action, the Turkey Valley football team claimed that district title outright with the 73-32 win over West Central (4-5, 2-2) Friday night at home.
The Trojans (6-1, 5-0) earned the bid to the playoffs as the No. 1 seed in the district and will face Edgewood-Colesburg (4-3) in the first round Friday, Oct. 21, at 7 p.m. The two teams squared off in the season opener with Turkey Valley coming out on top, 46-26.
Regular season
An unfamiliar sight for Trojan fans saw Turkey Valley trail 6-0 early in the first quarter when WC converted on a 4th and 6 and later scored for a 6-0 lead. However, the home team didn’t let that rattle them as the Red and White marched down the field, scoring on a pass from Noah Hanson to Calvin Bodensteiner. A pass to Carson Busta for two points put TV on top 8-6 and from there the Trojans never looked back. The Blue Devils were on the move again when Chase Hayek picked off a pass near the goal line and ran the ball back for a touchdown and a 16-6 lead.
In the second period, Oliver Schmitt pushed his way into the end zone for a 24-6 Trojan lead before West Central managed to score. TV took it from there scoring when Hanson plowed his way through traffic from 10 yards out. O. Schmitt scored his second TD of the game with 1:37 remaining in the half. A late Trojan hit allowed WC a chance to move down the field with time clicking when Ryan Franzen broke up a pass that landed in the hands of O. Schmitt who sprinted to the Blue Devil 15-yard line. With 43 seconds remaining, TV made it 46-12 at half when Hanson strung a pass to Bodensteiner for the score.
TV started the third quarter with a touchdown run by Hanson putting the Trojans up 52-12 to get the clock running continuously. After a score by West Central, the Red and White would tack on another touchdown when Carson Busta wove his way through traffic from the 15-yard line.
Leading 59-18 and the defense tiring, the Trojans gave up two touchdowns in the final quarter, while the TV offense still had energy for two of its own. O. Schmitt made short work of a possession for his third touchdown of the game from 34-yards out. Senior night was capped off by Mauricio Tinajero scoring the final touchdown of the game and the 73-32 win.
