By Becky Walz,
Friends on and off the field took their positions on the softball diamond Monday night as the Turkey Valley softball team (12-7, 9-1 UIC) hosted South Winn (9-11, 7-3 UIC).
Short contest
In game one, the Trojans won 11-1 in five innings. TV got on the board first with a run in the opening frame, but SW answered with one of its own in the top of the third. The Trojans put up another tally in the bottom of the third frame and added two in the fourth. TV put the game away in the fifth with a seven-run inning.
The Trojans got nine hits. Josie Weber was 2-for-2 with two doubles and two RBI, helping her own cause in the pitcher’s circle for the win. The junior allowed just the one run on three hits as she struck out seven. Olivia Drilling was 2-for-3 at the plate and drove in one run, while Aleah Hackman was 2-for-4 with a double and three RBI.
The Warriors had three hits total with two Morgan Kriener. Mary Frana had the other.
Eryn Luzum took the loss, giving up eight earned runs on nine hits.
Round two
The second game saw the Trojans hold off South Winn for the win, taking care of the Warriors 9-7.
TV scored three runs in the first and added two more in the second inning. However, the Warriors narrowed the margin as they plated three runs in the third frame. Two more South Winn tallies in the top of the fifth knotted the score 5-5, before the Trojans answered with three in bottom half of the same inning.
Determined, the Warriors pushed another run across home plate in the sixth, but TV was not to be had as the Trojans countered with a run again in their at-bat. SW managed to add one in the seventh, but the Warrior offense came up just short.
Hackman went six frames in the circle for TV, allowing six hits and striking out eight.
Smashing out doubles for TV were Hackman with two, while J. Weber and Brianna Busta each provided one. Hackman also had three RBI, while J. Weber drove in two runs and had two stolen bases.
In the pitcher’s circle, Morgan Kleve went the distance for South Winn, giving up five earned runs on nine hits while fanning three.
At the plate, senior Mary Frana went 3-for-4 with three stolen bases, while Emma Houdek was 2-for-4 with a double and three RBI.
