Turnovers costly for Warrior girls

By Becky Walz,

A couple slow nights offensively was too much for the  South Winn girls’ basketball team (3-5, 1-5 UIC) last week as the Warriors fell to NFV and Central Elkader.

Thursday night
Points were hard to come by Thursday for the Lady Warriors as they dropped a conference contest to North Fayette Valley (3-2, 3-2 UIC) at home.
“We need to do a better job taking care of the ball. We just had too many turnovers to compete with a team like NFV,” said Coach Justin Izer.
The TigerHawks held the Warriors to single digits in each of the four quarters, giving up just 14 points to South Winn.
Josie Hemesath and Janessa Zweibahmer each contributed four points, while Alison Heying and Emily Michels each had two. Josie Tieskoetter and Morgan Kleve had one apiece.

Back on the court
Returning to the hardwood Friday night, the Warriors hung tough with Central Elkader (7-1, 6-0 UIC), but couldn’t get it together, falling 59-36.
The Warriors trailed 12-7 after the first quarter and scored just five more in the second period to trail 30-12 at the half. South Winn put a strong fight in the second half, but fell behind to 44-20 as Central put the game away.
“We played three good quarters of basketball. We competed versus a really good basketball team,” said Coach Izer. “Our first quarter was good on both ends. We got sped up and couldn’t get ourselves calmed down in the second quarter. Then in second half, there were a few communication errors that needed to be cleaned up on the defensive side.”
Zweibahmer led the team with 11 points. Kleve provided nine points while Heying had seven points.
