The hits are there for the Turkey Valley baseball team (2-5, 2-3 UIC) as the Trojans picked up their first pair of wins, after falling three times late last week.

First wins
Hitting the road Tuesday, the Trojans won their first two games of the season over Clayton Ridge, 7-0 and 10-6.
Coach Dan Stepen credited the game one victory to Calvin Bodensteiner’s pitching performance and his team’s defense. Bodensteiner threw a complete game with 11 strikeouts on the books and allowed three hits.
In the batter’s box, Turkey Valley tallied four hits including a double by Noah Hanson. Others contributing hits were Dylan Reicks, Bodensteiner and Brennan Drilling, with Reicks and Bodensteiner driving in two runs apiece.
In game two it was Hanson’s turn on the mound as the junior rang up 10 batters and allowed five runs on five hits and two walks. Caleb Kurtenbach climbed the hill in relief and recorded the final strikeout of the game.
“Noah Hanson pitched well enough to win, and we found ways to get 10 runs across home plate,” said Coach Stepan.
Picking up the Trojans’ three hits in the game were Carson Busta with a double, along with singles by Hanson and Bodensteiner.

Tough couple innings
The Trojans got off to a solid start Thursday in a varsity twinbill with North Fayette Valley (2-1, 1-0 UIC), played in West Union.
TV took an early 6-0 lead before the TigerHawks’ bats woke up. The Trojans had a hard time getting out of a couple innings, allowing NFV to put up four runs in the fourth and sixth frames, sandwiched around an 8-run fifth inning. In the end it was NFV claiming the conference win, 18-8, in game one.
Game two was suspended due to darkness after three innings and will be picked back up Thursday, June 16, in Jackson Junction.
Taking the loss on the mound was Bodensteiner.
At the plate, the Trojans collected eight hits, with Noah Hanson getting a pair of singles and stolen bases. Six other Trojans had hits as well including Carson Busta, Garrett Kurtenbach, Bodensteiner, Oliver Schmitt, Garrett Dietzenbach and Braylen Byrne.

New Hampton tourney
The Trojans were back on the diamond in New Hampton for a tournament Saturday, falling 9-3 to New Hampton (4-0) and 6-4 to Waterloo East (2-7)
“Once we got past the first inning with New Hampton, we settled down and played good baseball. Russell Nieman gave such great innings on the mound,” said Coach Stepan.
Unfortunately, the first inning was the difference in the game as the Chickasaws pushed six runs across home plate, while the Trojans scattered their three runs among three innings without the ability to close the gap.
Nieman was on the hill for just over five innings, ringing up five batters while giving up four runs on six hits in relief. TV had five hits in the contest by Hanson, Dylan Reicks, G. Kurtenbach, Schmitt and Chase Hayek.
In game two, TV faced off with Waterloo East and tallied 11 hits among seven batters.
“We pitched well and played good defense on a windy day. Our bats came alive late, we just didn’t have enough to get over the hump,” noted Coach Stepan.
