TV boys creates over 25 turnovers

Aggressive on both ends of the floor, the Turkey Valley boys’ basketball team (13-5, 12-3 UIC) came away with a 68-58 win over Central Elkader (5-15, 3-12 UIC) Monday night in Jackson Junction.

Playing at home after two postponed dates, the Trojans and Warriors squared off with a teeter-totter of scoring advantages in the first period. When the buzzer rang, Central edged out the home team 17-16. It remained a close battle throughout the second period, with TV up 39-33 at the half.

TV opened up the third quarter on an 11-0 run, creating energy as they attacked the Warriors and extended its lead by as many as 15, expanding the lead to 54-42 with eight minutes to play. The remainder of the game, the Trojans held on to their 10-to-14-point lead.

“We were aggressive on the offense end and got great looks throughout the night and attacked the basket well. Offensively, we didn’t shoot well but got great looks and we attacked the boards hard tonight and got ourselves second and third opportunities,” said Coach Chris Sullivan. “On defense, we created 25+ turnovers but we still weren’t playing to the level that we are accustomed to on that end of the floor. Defense will be the focus point in practice as we need to clean up things as we are getting too high and extended and it is making us vulnerable.”

Kalvin Langreck had a big night 25 points with four assists, three rebounds and three steals. Noah Hanson had a solid game, pushing the tempo and getting to the rim as he finished with 12 points to go with six boards, three assists and three steals. Garrett Kurtenbach found ways to score as well, ending the night with 12 points. Under the basket, Dylan Reicks grabbed 10 boards.

The regular season will come to a close for the Trojans Thursday, Feb. 11 at 6:15 p.m., versus Clayton Ridge at home. TV begins the Class 1A road to state Monday, Feb. 15, versus Kee High in Jackson Junction at 7 p.m.
