It may have been a slow start for the Turkey Valley girls’ basketball team (7-4, 5-3 UIC) Thursday, but it certainly was a strong finish as the Trojans bested Tripoli (3-9) on the road 68-37.
It may have been a slow start for the Turkey Valley girls’ basketball team (7-4, 5-3 UIC) Thursday, but it certainly was a strong finish as the Trojans bested Tripoli (3-9) on the road 68-37.
“Once we got rolling, we were able to pull in front and consistently expand the lead. Jalyssa (Blazek) and Kara (Reicks) continued to be huge defensive threats. They both play with a lot of self-pride, their hustle was outstanding. They also were big for us offensively with many of their baskets coming off of pure hustle and great court sense,” noted Coach Carla Nymeyer. “Their big was a challenge for us, she was solid and hard to move on box outs. Jacqlyn (Schmitt) and the others did a nice job defensively on her, and our perimeter defenders helped out with good pressure on the ball to limit the entry pass. Jac did outstanding on offense, she attacked the basket well and got to the free throw line.”
Despite the slow start, the Trojans rolled out front 13-6 in the first period and piled up a 30-16 advantage at the break. The most damage was done in the third with TV knocking down 21 points en route to a 52-27 lead.
Three Trojans were in double figures, led by Jacqlyn Schmitt with 16, along with six rebounds. Jalyssa Blazek contributed 15 points, collected four boards and six steals. On the board with 13 points and five steals was Kara Reicks. Aubrey Hoffert added seven points and six rebounds.
