TV girls run out of steam

By Becky Walz,

The Turkey Valley girls’ basketball team (3-2, 2-2 UIC) dropped its second UIC contest Tuesday night, falling to Central Elkader (6-1, 5-0 UIC) at home, 52-39.
“We came out with great intensity and got the offense rolling right away, but unfortunately second half was a different story. We got some really great looks throughout the second half but couldn’t convert. Also, our intensity level and confidence faltered as Central’s defense heated up,” said Coach Carla Nymeyer. “We had some unforced turnovers that hurt us and some of our inexperience on the floor showed up in our all-around execution. Mentally we need to make sure we pick each other up, especially when the ball isn’t rolling our way. ”
The Trojans took a 12-6 first quarter lead with the spread remaining six at half as both squads drained 17 points in the second period to make it 30-23 at halftime. In the third, the Warriors cut the deficit in half to 36-33 and tied the game at 37-37 with 5:00 to play in the game. Soon after Central took the lead and never took their foot off the gas.
Jacqlyn Schmitt put up 11 points. Kara Reicks contributed nine, while Aubrey Hoffert had eight.
The Trojans will close out the week at home versus West Central Friday, Dec. 17. Then Saturday, Dec. 18, TV will travel to Luther College to play Osage at 7 p.m. Next week wraps up the first half of the season Tuesday, Dec. 21, at South Winn.
