The South Winn girls’ basketball team (6-13, 4-11 UIC) did have an answer for the pressure put on it by Turkey Valley (12-6, 10-4) Tuesday night in Jackson Junction. Similar to the first time the two squads met, the Trojans came out on top 44-20.
TV’s Jacqlyn Schmitt did all the scoring for either team in the first quarter as the Trojans finished with a 9-0 lead. In the second period, the Trojans’ persistent defense caused more chaos for the Warriors as TV held a 28-2 advantage at halftime with junior Morgan Kleve scoring the lone basket of the half for the Warriors.
While South Winn outscored the Trojans 18-16 in the second half, the damage had already been done and the Warriors couldn’t overcome the hole dug in the first half.

A look at TV’s numbers
After knocking down the first nine points of the game, J. Schmitt finished the night with 17 to go with five rebounds. Kara Reicks was also in double digits with 12 points and had five boards, six assists and seven steals. Contributing 11 points and three assists was Aubrey Hoffert, while Jalyssa Blazek added the final four points and led TV under the basket with six rebounds.
“We had some really good moments, but overall, there were portions I felt we didn’t do well, especially being this far in the season. We didn’t take care of the ball…had too many unforced turnovers and we struggled offensively at times with our movement and all being on the same page,” said TV Coach Carla Nymeyer. “We also didn’t ‘finish’ (play a complete game) we lacked intensity in the second half. We were fortunate that SW’s shots weren’t falling in the first half.”

SW wrap up
Leading the Warriors on the floor with nine points and six rebounds was senior Janessa Zweibahmer. Josie Tieskoetter contributed five points and four boards, while Morgan Kleve had four points, three rebounds and four steals. Janessa Zweibohmer had South Winn’s final two points of the game.
“It was kind of a tale of two halves. The first half was not pretty as we turned it over too many times and missed way too many shots around the rim,” said SW Coach Justin Izer. “In the second half we played with more confidence, and we attacked the rim a lot stronger. Only six second half turnovers are something we can build on as well.”

Coming up
Turkey Valley have two more contests this week as play Kee High Thursday, Feb. 3, in Lansing, then host Postville Friday, Feb. 3. Next week, the Trojans conclude the regular portion of the season at Riceville Monday, Feb. 7.
Wrapping up the regular portion of the season, the Warriors will host Kee High Friday, Feb. 4.
