By Becky Walz,
They are probably still celebrating in Jackson Junction after the Turkey Valley girls’ basketball team (14-5, 13-2 UIC) redeemed a 30-point loss earlier in the season to Class 1A No. 7 Central Elkader (17-2, 13-1 UIC) with a 41-40 win Tuesday night.
While the Warriors struck first offensively, it was the Trojans who took control of the game to lead 13-9 after the opening period. In the second, TV kept Central from scoring in the first three minutes and held the visitors’ second chance shots to a minimum to lead 25-19 at halftime.
In the third quarter, the Warrior offense began to make gains, pulling out front 32-31 with eight minutes to play. It all came down to the quality of each possession in the final period and free throws. Neither UIC team could find the bottom of the net until the 4:45 mark when Aubrey Hoffert nailed a bucket. With 3:10 to play, the teams remained on an even playing field at 35-all when Brianna Busta put in two points. Around the 2:00 mark, Central went back up 40-37 with a trey, leaving the Trojans little time to work with. With 47.7 seconds remaining, senior Alison Leibold stepped up to the charity stripe to pull TV within one. Jacqlyn Schmitt provided the winning baskets with a pair of free throws with 8.3 seconds remaining.
“Defense, defense, defense. I can’t say enough about how the girls played on that end of floor. I thought we did better handling their pressure this time around,” said Coach Steve Hoffert. “This was a great team win, everyone contributed from Alison (Leibold) and Jacqlyn (Schmitt) making pressure free throws late and Aubrey (Hoffert), Brianna (Busta), Mariah (Throndson) and Addi (Steinlage) for making big shots and smart decisions all game.”
Turkey Valley had a make-up game with Clayton Ridge Thursday, Feb. 2, in Jackson Junction and wraps of the regular season at Postville Friday, Feb. 3.
