The shots were raining in Tuesday night as the Turkey Valley girls’ basketball team (6-3, 5-2 UIC) poured it on Postville (2-8, 1-7 UIC), defeating the Pirates 54-37.
Coming off the long break, the Trojans put up a good effort early to lead 12-5 after the first eight minutes. While struggling to find consistency in execution early, TV fought through it with disruptive defense and extended its lead to 33-13 at halftime. The Pirates cut into the Trojan advantage in the third to make it 44-28, but that was the closest it would be.
“We had better focus in our rebounding, boxed out and crashed boards which was a must against their height inside as the game went on,” said Coach Carla Nymeyer.
It was a big game for J. Schmitt who poured in 28 points to go with nine rebounds and two steals. Aubrey Hoffert provided seven points and four steals.
The Trojans’ contest at Riceville for Thursday, Jan. 6, was postponed, so the next action set for TV is Tuesday, Jan. 11, versus MFL MarMac at home.
