It wasn’t the way the Turkey Valley volleyball team wanted the season to end, but it did Monday, on the Trojans’ home court, to Riceville in five sets with the Wildcats winning 3-2 in the Class 1A Region 6 opening round.
Turkey Valley ends the season with a 12-13 overall record. Riceville (18-21) advanced to play Saint Ansgar in the regional quarterfinal Wednesday, Oct. 18, in Saint Ansgar.
The Trojans started the show strong, playing with the Wildcats for much of the first set, until falling 16-25. Big serving runs by Riceville in set two gave the visitors a 25-14 set two win. Then momentum swung Turkey Valley’s way, with the home squad winning set three 25-21 and set four 25-15. Riceville came back to take the fifth set 15-6.
Turkey Valley produced 44 kills on 170 attack attempts. Serving the ball, the Trojans went 82-for-86 with four aces. In addition, they made 40 assists, 59 digs and four total blocks.
Adriana Tiedt manufactured 16 kills and served 10-for-11 with two aces. She also provided six digs. Layni Schuchhardt had 14 kills, two digs and one solo block. Maici Weber dished out 35 assists to go with three kills and a 17-for-17 serving performance. Kinsey Reicks also had three kills and served 15-for-16 with two ace serves, while Annika Bodensteiner was there for three kills. Defensively, Halle Weber had 22 digs while Morgan Vsetecka added eight.
“As with all seasons, it is hard to watch the seniors play the last volleyball game of their high school career. We had four seniors who stepped up for Turkey Valley and were an integral part of the team. As coaches, we hope they leave the season fulfilled in their career with the team. With that said, we started out slow and Riceville took advantage of that in the first two games, but once we got into our rhythm we were able to play tough. Coming down to the last game, we just couldn’t get it done,” said co-coaches Tammy Vrzak and Ashley Walz.
Turkey Valley graduates seniors Ryann Schmitt, Adriana Tiedt, Mariah Throndson and Halle Weber. They return varsity experience from Maici Weber, Kinsey Reicks, Layni Schuchhardt, Morgan Vsetecka, Delaney Busta and Annika Bodensteiner.
