TV stopped by TigerHawks

The Class 1A No. 14 Turkey Valley girls’ basketball team (10-5, 7-3 UIC) put its best effort forward Tuesday versus Upper Iowa Conference leader North Fayette Valley (12-1, 9-0 UIC) at home. At the end of the game, it was the visiting TigerHawks who walked away with the 55-44 victory.

It was NFV who set the tempo of the contest from the tip-off with both squads setting up a full-court press. TV’s Ali Hoffert provided much of the first quarter offense with six points, while Jalyssa Blazek added the other three, as the Trojans trailed 13-9. In the second period, the Red and White suffered a two-minute scoring drought yet kept the game within reach at 25-19 at halftime.

In the second half, Hoffert brought the Trojans within four early, before the TigerHawks stretched the lead back out to 39-32 with one period remaining.

“We couldn’t keep up with the TigerHawks as their talented squad was clicking on both sides of the ball. We lacked our normal aggressiveness but kept up a good fight to give ourselves chances to stay in the game,” said Coach Carla Nymeyer. “We also recognized our seniors tonight. Jaycie Byrne, Ali Hoffert and Kylie Wurzer have given our program a great boost and we appreciate everything they have done and are doing for us.”

Highlighting the TV stat sheet was senior Ali Hoffert with 19 points and nine rebounds. Putting in seven points to go with three boards and four steals was Jalyssa Blazek. Kara Reicks provided six points, as did Jaycie Byrne.

The Lady Trojans head to Kee High Friday, Jan. 22. Next week begins with a tussle between TV and Central Elkader Tuesday, Jan. 26, in Jackson Junction at 6:15 p.m.
