By Becky Walz,
A huge rushing game propelled the Turkey Valley football team (8-0, 6-0) to a 65-8 victory over West Central (2-6, 1-5) Friday night in Maynard to finish undefeated in the regular season.
The Trojans picked up 333 yards rushing on the night.
“We played well again as our defense once again controlled the game, only allowing one long touchdown pass,” noted Coach Mark Scott.
A little review
In the first quarter, the Trojans scored points in four different styles. Marcus Herold introduced himself and the run game with a 2-yard scamper before Calvin Bodensteiner made a tackle in the end zone for a safety. Soon after Garrett Kurtenbach hauled in a pass from Noah Hanson for a 30-yard touchdown reception. Oliver Schmitt wrapped up the fun with a 32-yard pick six to put TV on top 22-0 in the first period.
TV scored three more TDs in the second with Dylan Reicks finding the end zone twice along with Herold. The Blue Devils managed a big pass play before the half to score its lone TD of the game.
In the third period, Herold crossed the goal line for his third TD of the game followed by a second interception by O. Schmitt returned 25-yards to the house. Burke Busta closed out the game with a touchdown in the fourth to give the Trojans the 65-8 victory.
Individual notes
Oliver Schmitt had two interception returns for touchdowns, while Calvin Bodensteiner had an interception and a tackle in the end zone for a safety.
On offense, Marcus Herold and Dylan Reicks had good nights running the ball. Herold averaged 9.7 yards per carry as he went over the century mark with 116 yards in 12 carries. Reicks provided another six carries for 51 yards. Noah Hanson ran the offense well, scrambling several times to make positive plays, gathering 62 yards of rushing and 125 passing yards.
“Our offensive line of Collin Kleppe, Treyton Hulbert and Austin Kuehner dominated the line of scrimmage. The defensive line of Ryan Franzen, Robert Kruse and Garrett Kurtenbach pressured West Central’s quarterback all game,” concluded Coach Scott.
