TV thumps Blue Devils, 56-23

By Becky Walz,

Getting on the court just once last week didn’t slow the Turkey Valley girls’ basketball team (12-5, 9-3 UIC) as the Trojans pummeled West Central (6-11, 4-9 UIC) Friday at home, 56-23.

“I am really happy with our consistency and effort on both sides of the ball, especially the big run in the third quarter which was capped off with an awesome hustle play by Jacqlyn Schmitt,” said Coach Carla Nymeyer. “Our bench also contributed productive minutes for us.”

TV doubled up the Blue Devils in the first quarter, 14-7, and kept the ball flowing through the hoop in the second to go to the locker room with a 26-13 advantage. The third frame was highlighted by the Trojan defense holding WC to two points. Capping off the quarter was Ali Hoffert’s half-court attempt which rattled in and out before J. Schmitt crashed the boards and got the put back as time expired. With starters on the bench much of the final quarter and a continuous clock running, TV outscored the Blue Devils 11-8 to get an easy win.

Two seniors were in double figures scoring. Jaycie Byrne had 16 points, five steals and three rebounds. Ali Hoffert came through with 14 points, five rebounds, five assists and three steals. Kara Reicks knocked down seven points to go with four steals, while J. Schmitt added six points and five boards.

The Lady Trojans will make the short trip to Calmar to take on South Winn tonight (Tuesday, Feb. 2). Later this week, TV will host Clayton Ridge in a postponed conference contest Thursday, Feb. 4 and finish the three-game week at Postville Friday, Feb. 5.
