Earlier this week it was a tale of two totally different ball games for the Turkey Valley girls’ basketball team (13-5, 12-2 UIC) as they narrowly defeated non-conference foe Crestwood and bested West Central.
Non-conference
It came down to the final possession Monday as the Trojans outlasted Crestwood (6-10, 1-6 NEIC) at home, 45-41.
The first half belonged to the Cadets as the visitors led 17-11 after the opening frame. That advantage diminished slightly in the second period as Turkey Valley closed in 25-22 by halftime. Both defenses limited offensive opportunities in the third quarter as the Trojans pulled within one, 31-30, with eight minutes remaining. Two minutes into the final stanza, Turkey Valley pulled ahead, 35-33, a lead that would flip-flop in the closing minutes. A pair of Brianna Busta free throws with 31 ticks on the clock gave TV a 44-41 lead and Crestwood possibly the final possession of the game. However, a rushed Cadet missed shot gave the Trojans the defensive rebound. Addison Steinlage stepped up to the charity stripe with 10.6 seconds left, sinking 1-of-2 shots and securing the win.
The hot hand of the night went to Jacqlyn Schmitt who had 14 points and three blocks. Alison Leibold was also in double figures with 12 points to go with four assists. Just missing double digits with nine points and six rebounds was Brianna Busta. Steinlage also pulled down six boards.

Celebrating four seniors
While the final score doesn’t indicate how close Tuesday’s game really was, the Trojans managed to claim its 12th conference win over West Central (4-12, 2-10) at home, 47-28.
The visitors got on the board first and took the lead 10-9 with eight minutes down. It took into the second for the Trojans to get into an offensive rhythm to take the lead they would never again relinquish as the two teams broke with TV leading 25-16. It was point-for-point in the third as the Red and White held on to the nine-point advantage, 36-27 with one quarter remaining. TV held West Central to one free throw in the final period to add a tally to the win column, 47-28.
It was a double-double night for Schmitt with 22 points, 10 rebounds and three blocked shots. Contributing six points apiece were B. Busta and Aubrey Hoffert with Steinlage grabbing seven rebounds.
