Two-out triple provides game winning run

By Becky Walz,

The South Winn baseball team (5-1, 3-0 UIC) finished last week 1-1 with games on back-to-back nights, defeating MFL MarMac and falling to Mason City.

Bulldogs caged
South Winn found themselves in a tight UIC matchup with MFL MarMac Thursday night, but persevered to win, 4-3.
After scoring two runs in the top of the third inning, the Bulldogs were able to respond with a run of their own. Briar Tigges drove in a run in the fifth inning, but MFL MarMac responded with two runs in the bottom half of the same frame to tie the game 3-3. A two-out triple by Ethan Luzum scored Cael Kubouhsek in the sixth inning in what proved to be the winning run.
Kuboushek pitched effective in relief to pick up the win on the mound and Jordan Buchheit picked up the save tossing the final inning and striking out three batters. Keagen Streeter was the starting pitcher with 11 strikeouts.
“Unfortunately, we weren’t able to put up a big inning early and MFL MarMac was able to capitalize on us to put us in a tight game late. Two of our seniors (Briar Tigges and Ethan Luzum) came up with some big two out hits and Jordan Buchheit really stepped up in the bottom of the seventh striking out three batters in the middle of the lineup. Our guys have confidence late in close games, and hopefully these experiences will make us better as we progress along,” said Coach Alex Smith.

Dominating early
South Winn took on Mason City (4-5) in what played out to be a tale of two games.
The Warriors dominated the first three innings scoring 11 runs, including an eight-run third inning. Highlighting the offense was junior Nick Holien’s home run. Ethan Luzum was dominant on the mound for his three innings of work allowing no runs on no hits facing the minimum number of batters.
SW lost the momentum in the fourth inning as Mason City pounded out seven runs to close the gap and ended up scoring the final 15 runs of the game to secure the 15-11 win.
“It was great to see our guys jump out offensively early in the game, but once you put up a big inning, it is just as important to not allow a big inning following that up. We weren’t able to execute pitches and we had a few defensive miscues that led to extra outs. You can’t afford to do that against a solid offensive team. Overall, I’m confident our guys walked away from this game with a desire to be that much better when they return to the field,” said Coach Smith.
