Two solid quarters push TV girls over Warriors

By Becky Walz,

The difference winning and losing between the South Winn girls’ basketball team (3-10, 3-7 UIC) and Turkey Valley (10-4, 10-1 UIC) was the second and third quarters as the Trojans defeated the Warriors, 37-28, Friday night in Calmar.
The Trojans struck first but it was an 8-0 run for the middle part of the first quarter that lifted the Warriors to a 10-8 lead with eight minutes in the books. Both squads had numerous missed offensive opportunities in the second quarter with South Winn facing a scoring drought throughout the first seven and half minutes. A trey by Josie Tieskoetter finally gave the Warriors its three points in the second as TV took an 18-13 lead into the locker room.

In the third, South Winn once again couldn’t get the ball through the net until the closing two minutes, allowing the Trojans to extend its advantage to 28-15 with eight minutes to play. Getting back into an offensive rhythm, the Warriors couldn’t overcome the hole that had been dug for them as TV took advantage of free throw opportunities, converting on 6-of-8 and taking the win back to Jackson Junction.

Coaches’ thoughts
“It was another hard fought victory for us. Both teams played great defense fortunately for us we did enough on the offensive end,” said TV coach Steve Hoffert. “Aubrey Hoffert and Jacqlyn Schmitt provided our offense and Brianna Busta did a great job on defense.”
“We played extremely hard. We just found ourselves in a scoring drought in the second and third quarter. Scoring just five combined points in those two quarters made it difficult for us to keep pace with Turkey Valley,” said South Winn head coach Justin Izer.

Numbers for both
Leading all scorers with 14 points was Turkey Valley senior Aubrey Hoffert. Jacqlyn Schmitt added 27 to go with seven rebounds and two blocked shots. Putting up five points, with six boards and five steals was Brianna Busta.
For the Warriors Josie Tieskoetter made her return to the court with 10 points and seven rebounds. Coming through with seven points and four rebounds was Morgan Kleve.
