Two tallies in win column for Vikes

After a tough overtime loss earlier in the week, the Decorah girls’ basketball team (9-5, 4-1 NEIC) is back in the win column with a pair of victories Friday and Saturday over Crestwood and Beckman Catholic.

After a tough overtime loss earlier in the week, the Decorah girls’ basketball team (9-5, 4-1 NEIC) is back in the win column with a pair of victories Friday and Saturday over Crestwood and Beckman Catholic.

Big win
Sitting second in the conference behind Waverly-Shell Rock, the Vikings defeated Crestwood (2-11, 2-4 NEIC) at home Friday, 81-39.
Decorah started the game strong, scoring the first six points of the night. However, at the end of the quarter, the Vikes led 14-8. Crestwood started to come back in the second before the Vikings went back to throwing down the long ball. At the half, the Vikes led 30-21. Shots continued to fall in the second half, with Decorah up 50-34 with eight minutes to play. The Vikes continued to knock down the shots in the final period, outscoring the Cadets 31-5.
Yazmeen Whitsitt and Bryar Duwe were sharp for the Vikes, scoring 21 points apiece. Sami Mount had a good night with 16 points, while Haley Gossman had 11.
“This was a strong overall performance for us, though we still have some things to tighten up,” said Coach Shannon Quandahl.

Long drive
Decorah picked up another confidence boost with a 54-50 win over Beckman (5-11) Saturday night in Dyersville.
The Vikings put up 18 points in the first period to lead 18-8 and padded their lead for a 34-20 advantage at the break. Beckman made the game interesting in the second half, cutting into Decorah’s lead with 15 points in each the third and fourth frames as the Vikes managed to pull out the slim victory.
It was a 19-point night for sophomore Whitsitt, while Duwe knocked down 18. Kylie O’Hara provided another nine.

This week
Tuesday, Jan. 25, the Vikes will host a non-conference tussle with Denver and will be at New Hampton Friday, Jan. 28.
