Two UIC wins for South Winn boys

By Becky Walz,

After back-to-back losses, the South Winn boys’ basketball team (5-2, 4-1 UIC) is back in the win column, collecting two conference wins late last week over North Fayette Valley and Central Elkader.

Home court advantage
Thursday night, the Warriors hosted North Fayette Valley (2-3, 2-2 UIC), defeating the TigerHawks, 55-46.
It was close throughout the first period as SW went on top 15-12. The two UIC squads were even in the second quarter, each scoring 12 points to allow the Warriors to maintain a slim 27-24 halftime lead. NFV trimmed the Warrior advantage to two with eight minutes to play, 39-37. The SW defense came out in the final period to hold NFV to nine for the win.
“This was a fun game to play with not a lot of fouls. The game had great flow and both teams played well all the way through. It was our best 3-point shooting game of the season so far, we didn’t commit a lot of turnovers, and made our free throws late,” said Coach Derek Taylor. “Defensively we played pretty well, although we gave up a few more offensive rebounds than I would like, otherwise a nice win against a team that has been tough for us to beat recently.”
Trey Kriener put the Warriors on his back with 23 points and seven rebounds. Nick Holien posted 10 points and dished out two assists. Carson Wenthold and Keagen Streeter came through with seven points. C. Wenthold also had five rebounds and two steals, while Streeter led SW under the rim with 11 boards and two blocks.

Friday night hoops
Although tough to play back-to-back nights, South Winn pulled off another big UIC win 64-33 over Central Elkader (1-6, 1-4 UIC) Friday night at home.
“We were a little slow in the first half but put up 24 points versus 8 points in the third quarter to put the game out of reach,” said Coach Taylor. “Trey (Kriener) hit 11-of-13 free throws, and as a team we shot 74 percent from the line and 59 percent from the field.”
SW had balanced scoring with eight of athletes in the scoring column. Leading the way with 21 points, nine rebounds and four blocks was Kriener. Dawson Wenthold provided 10 points and three steals.
