It was a tale of two very different halves as the Decorah boys’ basketball team (9-1, 4-1 NEIC) defeated Prairie du Chien (4-9) on the road Tuesday night, 79-46.
“Our first half was very sluggish, and we didn’t have a lot of energy as a group. We increased our intensity in the second half especially on the defensive and that was the difference,” said Coach Jonathan Carlson. “It’s been a challenging couple of weeks with little games and routine, but everyone is in the same boat, and we can’t feel sorry for ourselves; just need to grit our teeth, dig our heels in and get tougher.”
At halftime, Decorah held a very slim 30-28 advantage but returned to the court from the break on fire racking up 49 points.
It was a total team effort with nine Vikes connecting for at least two points with Ben Bockman knocking down 19. Cael LaFrentz added 17, while Trey McCain put up 13 and Zach Driscoll provided 12.
The next week is a busy one, as the Vikings have three contests in four days, starting Friday, Jan. 19, with Crestwood at 8 p.m. Decorah will then travel to Mason City to face off with North Polk at North Iowa Area Community College at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 22, the Vikes will play Charles City in a make-up game at 7:30 p.m.
Scoring – Ben Bockman 19; Cael LaFrentz 17; Trey McCain 13; Zach Driscoll 12; Matthew Bockman 6; Louis Bucksa 6; Kaiden Quandahl 2; Gavin Groux 2; Andrew Rhodes 2
