“This tournament gave us an opportunity to try some different looks at lineups and different players. The three-set Jesup match at the end of the day was a good one for us to finish with,” said Decorah Coach Gina Holthaus. “We still have work to do, but I feel like this past week has been good for us We were able to work through some things that we needed some time to work through.”
The Vikings started the day by defeating Kingsland 2-0 (21-9, 21-7), then added a victory over MFL MarMac in pool play 2-0 (21-4, 21-12). Moving to the next bracket, Decorah defeated South Winn 2-0 (21-16, 21-10) before moving on to best Central Elkader 2-0 (21-16, 21-11).
That put the home team in the championship bracket. In the first match, Decorah handled Clayton Ridge 2-0 (21-8, 21-15) before surviving Jesup in three sets, 2-1 (21-15, 19-21, 15-9).
Viking stats were unavailable at press time.
Decorah is looking forward to celebrating its seniors on Tuesday night (Sept. 27) with Waukon. The Vikings are also planning to do a Mental Health night so if anyone would like to donate they can contact Jackie in the office. Funds will go to the Step Up and Reach Out Committee to support mental health education in the area.

“Playing six matches allows us to take one final look a combinations of players before gearing up for our stretch run in conference play. While we didn’t walk away with the win-loss record we were striving for, we got to see some areas we need to address in practice and some positives as well,” said Coach Smith.
