Vikes claim first at early bird; Warriors fifth

By Becky Walz,

It almost felt more like summer than spring Monday night as the Decorah boys’ track team hosted five other squads for the early bird meet.
The Vikes posted 182 points to take the team title. South Winn finished the night with 52 points in fifth place.

Eight golds
The Vikes picked up eight gold medals Monday night.
Joseph Hjelle took two crowns, winning both the shot put and the discus. The junior sent the shot put 48 feet 1 inch and sailed the discus 148 feet 5 inches.
Also, a double gold medalist was Haywood Stowe, winning the 100-meter dash in 11.17 seconds and the 200-meter dash in 23.56 seconds.
Breaking the tape in 54.37 seconds to win the 400-meter dash was senior Briggs Duwe. Hogan Smith was victorious in the 1600-meter run, stopping the clock at 4:58.96. Senior Brady Hogan claimed the victory in the 3200-meter race in 10:01.07.
Combining for the 4×800 relay victory were Bennett Schutte, Smith, August Witt and Trey McCain in a time of 8:47.23.
“What a rarity! We competed in both the Waukon Early Bird and the Decorah Early Bird in the same year — thank you Mother Nature,” said Decorah Coach Joel Rollinger. “We had a nice team effort Monday night. Our meet organization and preparation were greatly improved since last Thursday. I need to keep reminding myself that two grade levels haven’t played track and field since middle school. We are flattening the learning curve on how to prepare and compete at the high school level.”

Warriors begin the year
One South Winn event won gold Monday night. In the 4×100 relay, Zach Taylor, Evan Bushman, Sam Conway and Jacob Herold broke the tape in 44.83 seconds.
The Warriors claimed second in the 4×200. Combining for a time of 1:34.84 were Bushman, Herold, S. Conway and Dominic Sisneros. Isaiah Kruckman sprinted to a silver in the 3200-meter run in 11:11.91. Earning third was Chance Adam in the 1600-meter run in 5:06.96.
