Vikes close regular season at 13-7

By Becky Walz,

Closing out the regular season with back-to-back wins, the Decorah boys’ basketball team (13-7) is hoping to carry that momentum into the postseason. Thursday, the Vikes defeated Mason City (6-13) at home in the final regular season game 75-56.
Decorah struck first in the non-conference game Thursday; however, it was the Mohawks who took control with a 26-17 lead after the first period. The Vikes rallied in the second period to take the lead in the closing minute for a 41-38 advantage at halftime. Holding the visitors to just 18 points in the second half, Decorah pulled away for the easy victory.
Seven Vikes contributed at least five points in the contest with senior Ben Bockman leading the way with 29 points. Tate Johnson and Kaiden Quandahl were also in double figures with 10 points apiece, while Ethan Holthaus just missed that mark with nine. Matthew Bockman and Andrew Rhodes each had six with Kasey Krauskopf contributing five.
The Vikings started the playoffs Monday, Feb. 20, at home against West Delaware as they begin their quest for state in Class 3A Substate 4. A complete recap of Monday’s game will be published in the next Decorah Public Opinion Thursday, Feb. 23. The winner moves on to face the winner of Marion (16-4) and Vinton-Shellsburg (3-17) in the substate semifinal Thursday, Feb. 23, at 7 p.m., at a location to be determined.
