Vikes crowned champs at Central

The No. 8 Decorah girls’ wrestling team is peaking at the right time with a close finish at No. 3 Waverly-Shell Rock Thursday and a team title at the Central Elkader Invite Friday night.

Oh, so close
It all came down to matches forfeited by Decorah Thursday as Waverly-Shell Rock claimed victory 48-36 in the NEIC dual in Waverly.
The Vikes won six matches at Waverly including No. 5 Chloe Sheffield (105), Kaitlyn Bjork (115), Ana Simon (135), No. 9 Mairi Sessions (155), No. 1 Naomi Simon (170) and Kamryn Steines (190).

   Back on the mats less than 24 hours later, the Lady Vikes dominated to claim the team title with 208 points at Central Elkader Friday night.
   Decorah saw two grapplers earn titles with four others bringing home silver.
   Topping the podium for the Vikes were Ana Simon at 135 pounds and No. 1 Naomi Simon at 170 pounds.
 A. Simon, a freshman, opened her quest for the crown with a fall over Waukon’s Ava Bossom in 1:27 in the quarterfinal. She pulled off an upset in the semifinal, defeating No. 4 Cecilia Scarff of Southeast Polk by a 3-1 decision to advance to the finals. A. Simon secured her top spot in the weight class with a 3-0 decision over East Buchanan’s Destiny Krum.
   At 170 pounds, N. Simon has been a force and Friday was no different as she threw Aleah Eichenberger of New Hampton/Turkey Valley in 37 seconds in the quarterfinal. She kept her night alive with a 6-0 decision over No. 8 Brooklyn Graham of East Buchanan and finished by pinning Rachel Schauer of Fennimore (Wis.) in 1:45.
   Coming up just short of the title for Decorah were Ashley Bjork (130), McKenzie Tollefson (140), Lauren Luzum (145) and Madysen Lippe (235).
