Vikes dominate doubleheader

By Ian Wreisner

The Decorah baseball team (14-4, 10-0 NEIC) went 4-0 in conference action last week, sweeping Oelwein Wednesday and taking one from New Hampton Friday.

NEIC sweep
The Vikes drove numbers up to the double-digits in a double header against Oelwein (3-15, 1-9 NEIC) Wednesday. The Vikings took the first home game, 12-0, and doubled their score to end the nightcap at 24-0.
The Viking’s defense was iron-clad out the gate in the first contest of the night, with pitchers Briggs Duwe and Drew Snyder giving up only three hits. Snyder served two strikeouts, while Duwe walked away with a whopping six.
The Vikings slowly ramped things up, going from one run, to four, to seven across the first three innings. The game ended at the bottom of the fifth, with nearly every Viking player coming away with a run.
Decorah upped the ante in the nightcap, plating 24 runs off 14 hits. Kody Bodensteiner plated a respectable four, with Duwe batting him in for two doubles in the first and third innings.
The Viking’s defense held just as strong with two fresh arms up at the mound, with Dane Friedan throwing two strikeouts to match Snyder, and Gunnar Steine throwing another impressive six to match Duwe. Decorah coach Adam Riley saw the effort on the mound, and up at the plate.
“Throughout the night tonight, we continued to have very disciplined and focused at-bats by everyone on the team who had the opportunity to swing the bat,” Coach Adam Riley said. “Our pitching continues to get closer to where we need to be to allow us to start playing good team defense by continuing to pitch with command and proper focus.”

Home Friday
The Vikings made it six wins in a row, shutting out New Hampton (6-11, 5-5 NEIC) at home Friday night, 8-0.
Decorah kept the Chickasaws’ opportunities limited allowing just three hits in the contest as Cai Brevig struck out nine batters in his seven innings on the mound.
Offensively, Bodensteiner slugged two hits including a double. Keenan Tyler and Kyle Renken each had two hits with Tyler driving in three runs.
“Cai (Brevig) had another outstanding night on the mound in which he gave us a chance to play great team defense throughout the game. Offensively, up and down the lineup we had many great team at bats to support a great effort from Cai,” said Coach Riley.
