The season continues for the Decorah volleyball team which defeated Waterloo East in the first round of the Class 4A Region 1 match Tuesday night. Saturday the Vikes competed in the final Northeast Iowa Conference tournament going 2-2 for the day.
The Vikes (18-11) move on to face the NEIC champ Charles City (21-9) Thursday, Oct. 24, at 7 p.m., in Charles City. The winner advances to the regional final against the winner of the Xavier (26-4) and Waverly-Shell Rock (21-22). The regional semifinal will be played Tuesday, Oct. 29, on the home court of the highest remaining seed. The match will kick off at 7 p.m.
Round one
Tuesday night, Decorah won by set scores of 25-22, 25-11 and 25-18.
“It was not always pretty but our girls were able to come away with a win. I am pleased with the way they continued to work together to correct the little things, which ultimately will be important for us on Thursday night at Charles City,” said coach Gina Holthaus.
Unofficial stats showed the Vikes had 29 kills, 74 attack attempts, 27 assists, 30 digs, nine total blocks and served 63-for-73 with seven aces.
Dylin Thompson had a stellar night with 27 assists, eight digs and a serving performance of 23-for-24 with three aces. McKinley Massman provided 12 kills, eight digs and served 8-for-11 with an ace. Kelby Kerndt added nine kills, while Leah Holland had seven kills, five total blocks and was 4-for-5 at the service line. Sara Johanningmeier served 8-for-8 with an ace to go with five digs. Ellie Rolfs came up with four digs and served 6-for-10 with two aces.

NEIC tourney
Saturday was a busy day on the courts for the teams of the Northeast Iowa Conference as they competed in the annual tournament at Crestwood. The Vikes went 2-2 for the day.
The day started out with back-to-back wins over Waukon 2-0 (21-16) and Charles City 2-1 (21-14, 19-21, 15-11). In the afternoon session, the Vikes fell to New Hampton 2-0 (16-21, 17-12) and Crestwood 2-1 (19-21, 21-17, 9-15).
“New Hampton played very well all day long and kept us out of system making things harder for our setter and hitters. Crestwood also played well, but I certainly felt like we had many opportunities that we didn’t take care of and in addition we missed seven serves in that match which really hurt us. I was very pleased with Leah (Holland) and McKinley (Massman) on Saturday. I felt they both played very well all day long, handled frustrations well and were positive leaders for their team,” said coach Holthaus.
For the day, the Vikings tallied 86 kills on 82 assists with 108 digs, 22 total blocks and served 161-for-177 with 18 aces serves.
Individually, Dylin Thompson had 67 assists, 17 digs, seven aces serves as she went 35-for 38 at the service line. Massman hammered down 26 kills for the day with 19 digs and served 40-for-43 with four aces. Holland provided 22 kills, eight total blocks and had a 92.5 serve efficiency (25-for-27) while Kerndt was there for 15 kills and 16 digs. Rolfs came up with 22 digs and served 18-for 21, while Johanningmeier was 22-for-25 at the service line with 11 digs.
