Vikes fall to Bobcats 58-42, end year 17-7

By Becky Walz,

The shots wouldn’t fall in the second half for the Vikings Monday in the substate finale between Decorah and Western Dubuque boys’ basketball teams.
Unfortunately for Decorah fans, the Vikings ended the season 58-42 in Waverly.
Decorah ends the year one game shy of the Class 3A state tournament with a 17-7 overall mark.
“I’m proud of the way our guys battled all year and accomplished some great things. They should hold their heads high,” said Coach Jonathan Carlson. “Thank you to parents, supporters and all for making this year happen. We appreciate all of the support.”
In Monday’s final, Decorah’s Charlie Robinson struck first with a bucket and one, sinking the free throw. However, it didn’t take long for the Bobcats to answer and take an early 5-3 lead. The score seesawed between the two squads for much of the opening eight minutes with Western Dubuque sinking the final shot to go ahead 12-10. Decorah battled back in the second frame to go back on top 19-18 briefly before WD swished the final eight points of the quarter going into halftime with a 26-19 advantage over the Vikes.
The Vikings managed to get within six points in the third period, 28-22, on a Joe Bockman trey before Western Dubuque sped away again, leading 42-29 at the end of the frame. Looking to stop the clock, Decorah was forced to foul throughout the final eight minutes with the Bobcats connecting on 9-of-10 free throws to put the game away.

In the book
Junior Joe Bockman led the squad with 22 points. Charlie Robinson had seven while Briggs Duwe put up five. Freshman Trey McCain contributed three. Connecting for two points apiece were Jacob Pipho and Mason O’Hara, while Cael Luzum had one.
The Vikes graduate several seniors — Briggs Duwe, Charlie Robinson, Cael Luzum, Gunnar Steine and Mason O’Hara. However, they return a host of players with varsity experience.
