Honoring senior players and raising awareness for mental health, the Decorah volleyball team (23-5, 4-1 NEIC) ground out a 3-1 win over Charles City (9-18, 1-4 NEIC) Tuesday night at home. Set scores were 25-16, 21-25, 25-13 and 25-21. The victory puts the Class 4A No. 12 Vikings in second in the Northeast Iowa Conference.
“Charles City is a good defensive team, and they brought a lot of balls up, but we kept swinging and found some holes as the match wore on. It was good to see all our seniors on the floor, playing together and having some fun. I want to thank the seniors for their leadership and the parents for the support for the past four years,” said Coach Gina Holthaus. “We have some time off now to rest and hopefully heal a little from some of our injuries. For those who pledged to support us we had 54 kills, 80 digs and 3 ace severs on the night.”
Two Vikes were in double digits with kills, led by Amelia Dugger’s 20. The junior also had four total blocks was served 6-for-6. Haley Gossman also was consistent with 15 kills, while Annika Franzen was just shy with nine. Mara Holland was there to hand out 40 assists to go with 17 digs, four total blocks and a serving mark of 18-for-18. Defensively, Decorah was led by Dahlyn Headington who had 18 digs, while Kallie Mincks finished with 15. Mincks also served 23-for-24, while Headington went 12-for-12 with two aces.
