By Becky Walz,
All facets of the Decorah football team (5-2, 3-0) were in sync Friday night, holding Marion (1-5, 0-3) to 120 yards of offense and just four first downs en route to the 52-6 district win.
“Our team played a very good game. We were physical and skilled. Keenan (Tyler) connected with Jacob Pipho and Joe Bockman several times on the night. They had trouble stopping our passing game. We ran the ball just well enough that they needed to worry about that part of the game too,” said Coach Pat Trewin. “Our defense and special teams played very well again. We won the field position game and after their initial run, we shut them down.”
Welcome offense
After Marion introduced itself with a 70-yard touchdown run for the first score of the game, the momentum swung in Decorah’s favor and never left as the Vikings scored in every quarter of the district contest. Jacob Pipho put the Vikes on the scoreboard with a 20-yard reception from Keenan Tyler, putting Decorah on top 7-6. Decorah’s Brody Young added a 29-yard field goal, followed by a pair of Joseph Bockman touchdown receptions giving the Vikings a 24-6 halftime lead.
In the second half it was a pass from Tyler to Pipho, a Tyler 13-yard run and pick six by Carson Wemark that gave Decorah another 21 points. In the final period it was Brady Stille finding William Einck for the final 5-yard touchdown pass of the game.
A closer look
The Viking offense was really clicking with Keenan Tyler completing 14-for-22 passes for 260 yards. The senior quarterback’s main targets were Jacob Pipho and Joseph Bockman. Pipho plucked six passes out of the air for 147 yards, while Bockman grabbed seven receptions for 108 yards. In the ground game, Dane Frieden chewed up 41 yards in his seven carries. Tyler added nine carries for 38 yards.
Nineteen gridders recorded at least one assisted tackle, led by Trysten Finholt with four solo tackles and three assists. Joseph Hjelle had three solo tackles and three assisted stops, while Jaden Baker had two solo and four assisted stops.
Carson Wemark had a pick six in the latter part of the game, while Pipho also had an interception. Ryan Johanningmeier recovered a fumble.
Up next
The Vikings will wrap up the home portion of the district season Friday, Oct. 15, versus Waterloo East at 7:30 p.m., with Senior Night recognition.
“We will honor senior players and their families. They have been a great group and have worked hard. We hope to have a nice crowd again to show their support. It is another big night for us in the quest for a district championship and a playoff berth,” concluded Coach Trewin.
