Vikes overpower Hawks

By Becky Walz,

With the postseason looming on the horizon, the Decorah girls’ soccer team (6-3) had little issue defeating West Delaware Thursday. Saturday, the Vikings competed in a tournament at Waverly-Shell Rock.

On the road
In a game where West Delaware (0-12) was clearly overmatched, the Vikings took some time to get in gear Thursday on the road in Manchester.
“Despite setting up some good chances, we couldn’t put the ball where it needed to go, repeatedly shooting directly to West Delaware’s goalkeeper,” said Coach Loren Hendrickson.
Nearly 10 minutes into the contest, Decorah’s Payton Taylor put the Vikings goal away after a nice cross. From that point on, Decorah pretty much controlled the contest, putting up five more goals in the first half. In the second half, the Vikings rested its varsity and used its JV squad to finish out the game, outscoring the Hawks 4-1.
Goals in the first half were scored by Abby Milburn (2), Clara Rooney (2), Kaia Neal, and Payton Taylor. Second half goals came from Gabbi Dixon, Jorja Folkedahl, Ellen Rooney and Mya Redenius.

Saturday tourney
Game one of Saturday’s Waverly-Shell Rock tournament pitted the Vikings with Council Bluffs St. Albert. In an even matchup all the way through, it was Decorah who broke through for the game’s only goal. With under ten minutes remaining, it was Abby Milburn putting a hard shot off the crossbar that rebounded to Clara Rooney just inside the penalty area. Spotting an opening, C. Rooney slotted home the game winner just inside the left post.
In game two, Decorah faced Class 2A No. 1 Waverly-Shell Rock.
“In order to beat them we had to play our best game, and we just didn’t,” said Coach Hendrickson.
A few minutes into the game the Go-Hawks jumped on Decorah’s weak back pass and punished the Vikes’ mistake with the first W-SR goal. Not long after, the Vikes made another mistake and W-SR again punished Decorah with another goal. It wasn’t pretty as Decorah lost by the walkover score of 10-0 with about one minute left in the game.
In the game for third-place versus Bondurant Farrar, Decorah played well enough in the first half to keep the score at 0-0. With 2:00 remaining in the first half, lightning and thunder interrupted the contest and after waiting 20 minutes, tournament officials called off all remaining contests because of the approach of further threatening weather.

Final week
The Vikings have one more week of games before entering the postseason. Decorah hosts Dubuque Hempstead Thursday, May 20, at 5:30 p.m.
