By Becky Walz,
While the season may have been filled with ups and downs this year, the Decorah baseball team (20-13) picked up two wins last week finishing third in the Northeast Iowa Conference with a 14-6 record and earned its 20th win.
Monday’s game versus West Delaware was cancelled, leaving the Vikes to play their final regular season game at Waterloo West Tuesday; however, the outcome and stats were unavailable at press time.
Non-conference
Stepping out of the league, the Vikes shut out North Fayette Valley (3-20) Wednesday, winning by the 10-run mercy rule in five innings, 10-0.
Decorah hammered the ball early picking up three runs in the first frame, four in the third and three in the fourth, scattering 10 hits among six batters. Kaden Alstad, Brady Bohner, Caleb Meyer and Kelley Gates all had multi-hit games with doubles by Alstad, Bohner, Meyer and Landon Kuennen. Fisher Tweten accounted for the Vikes’ other hit. On the base paths Brayden Hartl stole a pair of bags.
Tweten earned the win, giving up no earned runs on three hits and struck out seven.

Split NEIC twinbill
Getting rained out a week earlier, the Vikings and Go-Hawks of Waverly-Shell Rock (21-12, 15-5 NEIC) made up the NEIC doubleheader Friday in Decorah, finishing in a split night.
The visitors set the pace in game one with a tally in the first, two in the second and three in the fourth. Eighth-grade designated hitter Kasen Tyler drove in Decorah’s lone runs of the contest in the bottom of the fourth as Waverly-Shell Rock added one final run in the fifth to win, 7-2.
Shouldering the loss was senior Landon Kuennen who went five frames on the hill, giving up six earned runs on nine hits and striking out three. Cash Riehle closed out the game, throwing to innings in relief.
Decorah garnered seven hits in the contest including a pair of doubles by Trevor Kuennen. Mason Avila also had two hits, while Meyer, Bohner and Tyler all had one.
The nightcap was also up for grabs as the Go-Hawks cashed in runs in the second and third, leading 2-0. In the bottom of the third, the scrappy Decorah squad responded with two of their own. Two runs in the fifth and four in the six gave the Vikes an 8-2 lead. Waverly-Shell Rock went down swinging as the Go-Hawks plated three runs in the seventh to threaten before getting shut down by Decorah, 8-5.
One inning on the hill was enough for Riehle to cash in for the win with Alstad and Bohner also throwing for Decorah.
At the plate, Bohner came up with a 3-for-4 performance including a double to drive in three of the Vikes’ runs. Alstad and Gates were 2-for-2, with Hartl and Meyer driving in two apiece.
