Vikes rout SW to start season

Opening the season with a dual of two Winneshiek County teams, the Decorah softball team (1-0, 0-0 NEIC) defeated South Winn (0-1, 0-0 UIC) at home Tuesday, 6-2.
Lead-off batter for the Vikings, Bryar Duwe connected for a single in the bottom of the first. The junior eventually scored after stealing second, taking third on a pass ball and home on an SW error. Ellie Luzum later crossed home plate to give Decorah the 2-0 lead after the opening frame.

The Warriors cut the deficit in half when Ruthie Frana scored in the second on a Liz Engelhardt single. South Winn knotted the score at 2-2 in the top of the third when Alison Heying crossed home plate. Then the Vikes went to work, scoring four runs in the bottom half of the same inning, including a two-run home run to Luzum over the left field fence to end the scoring.
Decorah’s Clara Hjelle went the distance in the circle, allowing two runs on three hits and five walks while striking out 11 Warrior batters.
Suffering the loss for South Winn was Eryn Luzum despite ringing up 11 batters.
“I was happy with our preparation for the game. We made all the routine plays and there were four that were tougher to make and ended up costing us five runs overall,” said SW Coach Ken Buchheit. “Hitting needs to improve, but the effort was great as well. We are looking forward to building off this game for some more tough teams this week.”

Decorah hosts Turkey Valley tonight (Thursday, May 26) at 7 p.m., then heads to MFL MarMac Friday, May 27, at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 31, the Vikings host its first NEIC doubleheader versus New Hampton at 5:30 p.m.
The Warriors host St. Ansgar Thursday, May 26, at 5:30 p.m., and are at Crestwood Friday, May 27, at 7 p.m.
