Vike’s season ends in state quarterfinal

The Decorah girls’ tennis season came to a screeching halt in the state quarterfinal match against Waterloo Columbus on Monday afternoon when the Sailors shut out the Vikes, 5-0. 
“After the excitement of the regional final meet of the year at the Luther College courts on Saturday against Aplington-Parkersburg, Columbus smothered any fire that we could start before it got going,” said Coach Larry Berland. “Columbus will be the number two seeded team this year in the final four tournament. They are for real.”

As is the case in team tennis, games are decided by no-add scoring. When deuce is reached in a game, only one more point is played to determine the winner of the game. Those with good serves or solid returns have a true advantage. Columbus’ lineup is full of those type of players. 
Allison Pavlovec was heading for a win at No. 6 singles when play was suspended as Columbus recorded their fifth singles win. 
“Allison continues to play super tennis no matter who she goes up against. It will be interesting to see her play at the state tourney starting Friday. My only disappointment from today was that the meet ended in singles. I was hoping that state tournament bound Annalise (Skrade) and Mara (Holland) would

have the chance to play doubles against Columbus. A doubles match against the No. 2 seeded Sailors doubles team would have been a super tune up before state play,” said Coach Berland. “The team really tried to do their best but found the going to be tough. As a coach, you cannot ask for anything more from your players. The girls made it to state play as one of only eight teams in 1-A still playing. The seniors on the team were able to make it to state for the second year in a row. That says a lot about the team’s grit.”

Singles: No. 1 Annalise Skrade (Decorah) lost 1-6, 0-6 to Chloe Butler (Columbus); No. 2 Mara Holland (Decorah) lost 2-6, 2-6 to Sophia Fain (Columbus); No. 3 Kristi Kjome-Johnson (Decorah) lost 0-6, 1-6 to Alli Hagness (Columbus); No. 4 Nadia Johnson (Decorah) lost 1-6, 0-6 to Avery Hogan (Columbus); No. 5 Evon Leitz (Decorah) lost 3-6, 0-6 to Erin Hollen (Columbus); No. 6 Allison Pavlovec (Decorah) did not finish against Bella Nelson (Columbus)
