Vikes second at dual tourney

The Decorah boys’ wrestling team had a solid weekend in preparation for the Northeast Iowa Conference meet Saturday at the Center Point-Urbana dual tournament, finishing second.
The Vikes went 3-1 on the day, picking up victories over the hosts 68-9, Oelwein 68-6 and Vinton-Shellsburg 57-21. The lone loss came to West Delaware 50-22.
Class 2A No. 12 Gavin Knutson (106) was one of four Vikings that went perfect with three falls and a forfeit. Battling Jackson McGonegle of Center Point-Urbana, he got the pin in 55 seconds. It was another fall against Vinton-Shellsburg’s Eli Ollinger, this time in just 50 seconds. In his final match against Lucas Peters of West Delaware, Knutson turned the Hawk in 54 seconds.
At 132 pounds, Class 2A No. 6 Mason Avila (132) also went 4-0. Avila won by a 9-3 decision over Will Griswold of CPU and needed just 16 seconds to throw Landon Osborn of Vinton-Shellsburg. It took Avila 1:21 to pin Rylan Gaul of West Delaware with his Oelwein match forfeited.
It was a tech fall, decision, major decision and a forfeit for Class 2A No. 10 William Fullhart at 144 pounds. The freshman took 2:43 to defeat Aiden Novoa of CPU in a 17-2 tech fall. Against Owen Mullinex of Vinton-Shellsburg, Fullhart earned the win by an 8-4 decision. In a 13-4 major decision victory, the Viking defeated West Delaware’s Ryan Hilby.
Brody Hanson (157) opened the day with a fall in 2:44 over Danny Small of Center Point-Urbana and followed it with another pin against Oelwein’s Seth Latham in 52 seconds. Hanson turned Brant Dickinson of Vinton-Shellsburg in 3:37 and capped off the day with a forfeited match in the West Delaware dual.

Postseason coming
The Vikings will have a full week to prepare for the Northeast Iowa Conference meet, which is Saturday, Jan. 27, in Waverly at 10 a.m.
