By Becky Walz,

It was a stellar day in the pool for the Decorah boys’ swim team as the Vikings topped the field at the Wahawk Invite in Waterloo Saturday. Decorah tallied 344 points to win the invite with Vinton-Shellsburg-Center Point-Urbana coming in second with 270.
Of the 11 events, the Vikes touched the wall first in three.
Winning gold to start the day was the 200 medley relay team of Isaac Knaack, Mason Cote, Simon Kutz and Dylan Hogan. The quartet had the best time of 1:47.99.
Reid Kuehner won gold in the 200 individual medley in 2:21.45, with teammate James VanderVelden claiming silver in 2:23.59. In the 500 freestyle it was Dominic Bigalk coming out first in 5:24.97.
Aside from VanderVelden in the 200 IM, three other events were runners-up including Knaack in the 100 freestyle in 50.52 seconds and the 100 backstroke in 58.26 seconds. The 400 freestyle relay was also second in 3:32.86. Members of that relay included Knaack, Kutz, Cote and Bigalk.
“This was a nice team win with several younger swimmers scoring varsity points. Coming off winter break, a heavy week of training and some sick athletes, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect from the meet. It is great to see our veterans leading the way — but to have our freshman/sophomores stepping up the way they are is key for our success in the championship season later this month,” said Coach Loran Storts.
Decorah will be back in the water Tuesday, Jan. 10, against Cedar Falls and Cedar Rapids Kennedy at Cedar Falls Holmes Junior High at 6 p.m. The Vikings are at Fort Dodge for an invite Saturday, Jan. 14, beginning at 10 a.m.
