Vikes shut down Cadets

By Becky Walz,

The Decorah girls’ basketball team (3-2, 1-0 NEIC) was in control of Tuesday’s NEIC opener from start to finish, defeating Crestwood (0-4, 0-1 NEIC) on the road, 52-22.
“I was glad to get the win for our first conference game. We need to tighten a few things before we play New Hampton on Friday, but overall, this was a solid performance for our team,” said Coach Shannon Quandahl.
The Viking defense made for some slim pickings offensively for the Cadets in the first half, shutting out the home team to score until nearly the three-minute mark in the first quarter. After the first period, Decorah was on top 19-3 and continued to build the lead to 24-7 by halftime. Crestwood managed just two points in the third period as the Vikings added another 15 for a 39-9 advantage with eight minutes to play.
Bryar Duwe and Yazmeen Whitsitt were on fire, knocking down 18 and 16 points respectively to lead the Viking offensive attack. Kylie O’Hara was also in double figures with 12 points, while Brynn Storhoff was on the board with four. Autumn Schaller added two and Sami Mount had one.
The Vikes host New Hampton Friday, Dec. 17, at 6:45 p.m., then competes in their second Border Battle game versus Caledonia Saturday, Dec. 18 at 5:30 p.m. Decorah visits Waukon Tuesday, Dec. 21.
