Vikes shut down Comets

By Becky Walz,

Top-notch defense propelled the Decorah girls’ basketball team (10-5, 7-2 NEIC) past Charles City (2-14, 1-7 NEIC) at home Tuesday, 61-37.

“This was a true team effort with all players contributing on both ends of the floor. The girls had fun, they competed and worked together,” said Coach Shannon Quandahl. “We still have work to do and areas to improve upon before next week’s games.”

Decorah kept the Comets from finding the basket throughout the first period, strolling to a 14-0 lead. The Viking defense kept up the stand through the first four minutes of the second period, not allowing a Charles City basket until midway through the quarter. By halftime the Viking lead had stretched to 28-10 and only continued to grow in the second half.

Senior Abigail Milburn had the hot hand with 16 points. Haley Gossman was also in double figures with 11 points, followed by Bryar Duwe’s 10.
