The Decorah girls’ tennis team ventured into Osage Green Devil territory on Tuesday and came out with a solid victory, 9-0.
Playing at the number one spot, Kristi Kjome-Johnson found herself in full battle to win a victory over a very good opponent — Kaitlyn Olson. After losing the first set, Kjome-Johnson put the pedal to the medal and won the second set in a point to point battle. That left it up to a 10 point tie-breaker to decide the winner of the match. The tie-breaker went back and forth until the Viking senior was able to put two points in a row together earning a 10-8 tie-breaker score and the match victory.
Meanwhile, Evon Leitz was having trouble taking the fight out of her opponent as well in the No. 2 spot. In a very close first set, Leitz rallied to pull out a first set win over Kendall Olson. With confidence restored, she cruised to a match victory by shutting out her opponent in the second set.
In the No. 3 spot, Allison Pavlovec handedly defeated Lauren Swenson 6-1 and 6-0, as Paige Lange followed suit in the No. 4 spot over Brooklyn Brock.
Haley Gossman won her singles match 6-0, 6-0 over Susana Meier at No. 5 and then teamed with Leitz to collect a 6-0, 6-0 doubles victory over Meier and Faith Nielsen as the No. 3 doubles team.
Filling out the singles matches, Camryn Holland bested Nielsen 6-1 and 6-0.
In doubles action it was Annalise Skrade and Mara Holland defeated the Ka. Olson and Ke. Olson in 6-0 and 6-1 sets in the top spot. Kjome-Johnson and Lange took care of Swenson and Brock in the No. 2 spot 6-0 and 6-0 as well.
Decorah is away for its next three matches, heading to Union tonight (Thursday, April 21) for a 4:30 p.m. start. Monday, April 25, the Vikes are at Charles City and are at Oelwein Tuesday, April 26.
