Vikes stun CC; Comets held to 42 total yards

By Becky Walz,

A defensive effort that allowed just 42 yards of total offense spurred the Decorah football team (2-2, 0-0) to a 28-0 homecoming victory Friday over Charles City (0-4, 0-0).
“We are very proud to get this victory on homecoming for all our fans. Our team worked very hard this week and it paid off. We played pretty well in all phases of the game,” said Coach Pat Trewin.

An early lead
The Vikings found a way to score in every quarter. The scoring started when Decorah got into the red zone and Jaden Baker cleaned things up by taking the ball through heavy traffic into the end zone for the score. The PAT by Erik Hjelle was good, putting it at 7-0 after the first 12 minutes.
Hjelle had his name called in the second quarter. The senior drilled a 24-yard field goal to put Decorah on top 10-0. Following Hjelle’s ensuing kickoff, which was a touchback, the Viking defense drove a Comet ball carrier back — all the way the end zone where Dakota Johnson drug him down for a safety and the 12-0 halftime advantage.
Decorah’s Fisher Tweten picked up the second safety of the game as Charles City quarterback Jordan Foster raced from the junior in the third period.
Holding a 14-0 lead, the Vikings finished the game with a pair of touchdowns in the fourth as Hjelle charged through traffic for four yards, along with a 1-yard carry by Baker.

Final thoughts
Overall, Decorah had 187 yards rushing and another 27 through the air for 214 total yards. Charles City had 42 yards total.
“Our offense was able to stick with our blocks, and our backs ran hard. On special teams we kicked and covered well. Erik Hjelle had several touchbacks and a field goal. Our defense was the biggest highlight, however. Coaches Tangen, Bucksa and Waskow had a great plan, and we were able to execute it. They were in position to score three times and we were able to keep them out of the end zone. Also getting two safeties really fired us up. I do not recall a Decorah game where we recorded two safeties,” said Coach Trewin.
Stille had a solid game with 74 yards rushing and completed 4-of-9 passes for 27 yards. Baker carried the pigskin 13 times for 50 yards, while Hjelle had 39 yards rushing. Four Vikes were targets for Stille through the air including Kaiden Quandahl, Kasey Krauskopf, Dakota Johnson and Ben Wymer.
Defensively, it was Stille leading the charge as well with four solo and three assisted tackles. Wymer had one solo and one assisted stop, along with an interception return of 22 yards. Brady Benzing also had an interception return for 15 yards, while Kadin Remick came up with a fumble recovery.

This Friday
The Vikings will travel to Mason City Friday, Sept. 23, to open district play at 7:30 p.m.
“Mason City has an excellent quarterback with several fast receivers. He can throw it a mile and has been very accurate. We will need to cover well and mix things up to get him off his game. Making the tackle at the end of the play will also be key. On offense and special teams, we will need to get and use good field position. We will need to break some plays wherever we can to get some scores and then to keep their offense off the field,” noted Coach Trewin.
