By Becky Walz,
It was a pair of road games Wednesday and Thursday for the Decorah baseball team (6-2, 3-0 NEIC) as the Vikings stepped away from the Northeast Iowa Conference.
Starting with seven
Decorah jumped all over North Fayette Valley in West Union Tuesday, sending 10 batters to the plate in the first inning to score seven runs. The Vikes finished the game in five frames after pushing two runs home in the third and one in the fourth.
“Coach Hogan and I are extremely pleased with the approach upperclassmen have made the last two days in playing very good team baseball after an intense conference win the night before. Our defense was solid behind an excellent effort by Gunnar Steine on the mound,” said Coach Adam Riley. “Offensively the whole team had some very good at bats highlighted by Kyle Renken who is taking advantage of every opportunity given to him.”
In his five innings on the hill, Steine rung up seven batters for the shutout win. Collecting doubles were James Marx and Noah Storts, while Kyle Renken rapped up a pair of singles and drove in three runs.

Non-conference duel
After a number of very solid games to start the season, the Vikings lost a pair of non-conference games at Independence Friday night, 8-7 and 12-1.
“We did not exhibit enough mental and physical discipline in all phases of the game to be competitive against a quality opponent tonight and we have more work ahead of us,” said Coach Riley.
In game one, Decorah clawed its way back from an 8-3 deficit to come within one in the seventh before the Mustangs shut the Vikings down. The nightcap was a five-inning affair as Independence raced away with the 12-1 win.
