Vikes suffers first loss

By Becky Walz,

The Decorah girls’ soccer team put pressure on the Gladbrook-Reinbeck Rebels and had chances to score, but suffered its first defeat, 2-0, at home Thursday night.
The Vikings opened the game with the ball and immediately went to work. In the first half Clara Rooney put a shot off the cross bar and Kaia Neal had a shot deflect off another defender right into the goalkeeper’s hands. The Rebels were able to get past midfield after nearly 18 minutes, firing a solid shot which took a deflection off another player and into the net, putting G-R on the scoreboard, 1-0. Six minutes later, the Vikings misplayed a ball out of the backfield, giving it directly to a Rebel forward who had a wide-open net in front of her and she didn’t miss the shot to give G-R a 2-0 lead at the half and eventually the win.
“We were able to develop several other good chances in the first half but couldn’t finish any of them,” said Coach Loren Hendrickson. “The second was played fairly evenly, but we started just kicking the ball long and trying to go one-on-one instead of passing the ball and attacking as a team. This was a tough loss to take. I think we out shot Gladbrook-Reinbeck by a large margin. We just didn’t get the right shot at the right time.”
Monday the Vikings hosted Waterloo East in their lone contest this week. Next up for Decorah will be a road match at Denver, Monday, April 26.
