By Becky Walz,
After a successful week one, the Decorah volleyball team (5-0, 0-0 NEIC) hosted Saint Ansgar (1-3) Tuesday, winning 3-2.
Set scores were 25-7, 22-25, 25-19, 22-25 and 15-11.
“This was a challenging match for us to work through as Saint Ansgar is a very scrappy volleyball team. They didn’t let the ball hit the floor and chased down some big plays. One of the biggest take aways from the match was our poor serve receive. We know that the girls know that, and it is something that we will continue to work on,” said Coach Gina Holthaus. “In set two, we also missed some crucial serves. We know that these two things are controllable, and this is where we will focus our time and energy. We didn’t give up or give in, they kept fighting until the very end.”
As a team, Decorah had 49 kills on 130 attack attempts. They produced 44 assists, 58 digs and two solo blocks. From the line they went 102-for-109 serving with seven aces.
Mara Holland dished out 37 assists and went 31-for-31 in serving with five aces in addition to 13 digs and four kills. Amelia Dugger had 12 of the kills and served 12-for-13. Haley Gossman had 11 kills and 11 digs. Providing eight kills, nine digs and serving 13-for-14 was Chloe Reiser, while Annika Franzen hammered out seven kills to go with seven digs and a 27-for-27 serving performance. Ashley Schneberger also had seven kills, two digs and went 8-for-11 in serves. Dahlyn Headington provided five digs, while Lani Hubka had four.
The Vikings are back on the road tonight (Thursday, Sept. 2) in a non-conference match versus North Fayette Valley at 7:30 p.m. Decorah opens the NEIC season at Crestwood Tuesday, Sept. 7, at 7:15 p.m.
