In an unusual game sidled with a rain delay and other distractions, the Decorah baseball team (15-4) picked up a 5-2 non-conference win over Waterloo East (4-24) on the road Tuesday night.
“Dane Frieden pitched well enough in his first varsity start to give us a chance to win the ball game. Offensively we were able to have some very good situational at bats to help score enough runs to win the ball game. In the final two innings, Tyler Thompson was outstanding in relief and exhibited great leadership to finish the game,” said Coach Adam Riley.
A trio of singles to start the contest by Cael Luzum, Tyler Thompson and Keenan Tyler, set the stage for the Vikes’ first run of the game on a Noah Storts sac fly. The Trojans countered with a run of their own in the bottom of the second frame, setting the stage for a showdown.
Back in the batter’s box, the Vikings’ Briggs Duwe led off the third inning with a double and advanced to third on a pass ball, allowing Keenan Tyler to pound out a sac fly to plate a Viking run. Thompson later scored in the same frame after being issued a walk when Cai Brevig connected for a single as well. Waterloo East put up a run in the third, but would go down in order from there, as Decorah added a run in the fifth and seventh to close out the game.
Junior Dane Frieden got his first varsity start and earned the win in five innings, allowing two earned runs on three hits and striking out six. Thompson pitched two innings of relief for the Vikes.
Decorah had 11 hits, with Luzum going 3-for-4 with a triple and a double. Storts also had two hits, while Brevig drove in two runs.
