Vikes take on No. 3 Monticello

The Decorah boys’ basketball team (15-6) tested the playoff waters, nearly defeating Class 3A No. 3 Monticello (19-0) Thursday night in Oelwein. In the end it was the Panthers who survived, 47-46.

The Vikings led for much of the game, edging after the first eight minutes, 11-10. In the second quarter, Decorah continued to be out front and went into the halftime break with a 24-17 advantage. The Panthers erased their deficit to 33-32 in the third, outscoring the Vikes 15-9. Coming down to the wire, the third-ranked Monticello Panthers clawed their way out front to defeat the NEIC champions, 47-46.

It was a 14 points night for Charlie Robinson as Joe Bockman knocked down 12. Freshman Trey McCain dropped in another eight points for the Vikes. With four points apiece were Briggs Duwe, Jacob Pipho and Carson Wemark.

Decorah opened the postseason in earnest Monday at home versus Independence (8-10) in Class 3A Substate 3 action. Full coverage will be published online and in Thursday’s Decorah Public Opinion.
