Viking domination continues

The Decorah boys’ basketball team (18-1, 10-0 NEIC) showed why its ranked No. 1 in Class 3A as it picked up a 64-50 win over Waverly-Shell Rock (12-8, 7-3 NEIC) Friday night on the road.

The Vikings quickly pulled away from the Go-Hawks in the first quarter, 17-3, with five different Vikes contributing to the score. In the second, Decorah continued to run the floor well, despite allowing 10 Go-Hawk points. It transferred to a 31-13 lead for the Vikings at halftime. Both NEIC squads were fired up in the third, combining for 35 points, with W-SR finishing the period on a 10-0 run. Leading 49-30 entering the final period, the Vikes saw their advantage shrink to 11 with 4:00 to play. Decorah finished the game strong, claiming the 64-50 win.
Decorah had a balanced offensive attack with seven Vikings able to score. Coming off the bench, Ben Bockman led the way with 13 points to go with eight rebounds and three assists. Joe Bockman had 12 points, five rebounds, four steals and three assists, while Trey McCain had 12 points and four assists. Carson Wemark was also in double digits with 10 points and 13 rebounds, along with four assists and two steals.
“It wasn’t the strongest game offensively or defensively we have played, but the guys did what they needed to earn a road victory in a tough environment,” said Coach Jonathan Carlson. “It’s quite an accomplishment to be undefeated in NEIC play and we need to stay strong next week.”

Decorah’s final regular season contest will take place tonight, Tuesday, Feb. 15, versus West Delaware at 7:30 p.m. The Vikings will open the postseason at home versus Crestwood (8-13) Monday, Feb. 21, at 7 p.m.
