The Decorah girls’ tennis team stayed home and faced up against a determined Oelwein Husky team on Monday afternoon in a make-up competition from last week.
Make-up match
Forced into having to play solid tennis, the Viking girls came away with an easier sounding 9-0 victory than it really was. Two matches were decided by tie-breakers and another was game to game until the very end.
“Dealing with a scrambled line-up, the girls were asked to step up and they did. Anytime you can play 10 girls in the varsity line up and come away with a win, it is a good night for sure. Unless you have been a coach that has had quality depth, it is difficult to imagine how very nice it is. That depth allows a coach to move girls around and still come out on top,” said Coach Larry Berland.
“Paige Lange at No. 4 singles and Haley Gossman at the No. 5 spot really controlled their matches. They proved that Decorah was anything but an Oreo cookie with a soft creme-filled middle. The same can be said for Allison Pavlovec who really fought her way back to claim a victory in straight sets.
