Viking girls finish second in conference

By Becky Walz,

Friday’s 66-52 loss on the road at Class 4A No. 2 Waverly-Shell Rock (21-0, 10-0 NEIC) made it just two in the NEIC for Decorah girls’ basketball team (14-7, 8-2 NEIC) as the Vikes finished second in the league.
Keeping up with the Go-Hawks Decorah trailed 23-20 after the first quarter. The Vikings’ offense grew quieter in the second, allowing W-SR to go ahead 40-31 at the break. The home team pushed ahead further in the third, extending their lead to 55-41 which was enough to secure the win as both teams put up 11 points in the final eight minutes.
Yazmeen Whitsitt put up a game-high 30 points and nabbed three rebounds. Adding nine points was Sydney Thompson, while Claire Storhoff contributed eight points and five boards.
The Vikes now turn their attention to a postseason run that begins with the Class 4A Region 2 quarterfinal against Charles City at home Wednesday, Feb. 14, at 7 p.m. A win would move Decorah into the semifinals at Western Dubuque against the Bobcats Saturday, Feb. 17, at 7 p.m. The regional final will be held Tuesday, Feb. 20, at the highest remaining ranked team’s home court at 7 p.m.

Scoring – Yazmeen Whitsitt 30; Sydney Thompson 9; Claire Storhoff 8; Gabbi Dixon 3; Liz Bucksa 2
